Voiceover artists quit being bitches

Posted by Poniiboi - June 26th, 2012

No way I'm wasting my front page post on this, but it needs to be said.

In the middle of promoting myself on the site, I got a msg back from an animator saying I shouldn't be "asking for ad revenue," that I should just be "looking for exposure."

You're kidding me, right?

First of all, you're not Walt Disney. Second, what exposure? LMAO

Yet I see voiceover artists running around like puppies looking for scraps. I hope that if you're good, you're getting a piece of the ad revenue.

[NOTE: Some animators can't even tell the difference between ad revenue and an upfront payment.

AD REVENUE is what NG pays you from ads. Unscrupulous animators set this to 0% for you and make you think they are giving you some kind of "exposure." It is not paid upfront, so don't worry - I'm not asking you to rob your mom's purse to pay for my services, broke ass.]

The NG ToS says that it "frowns upon" setting a collaborator's ad revenue portion to 0.

So to all the bigheaded animators, fuck you. Not speaking to all animators, just the few that share the viewpoint of the idiot who msgd me.

And to the puppy dog VO's, get your shit together. Don't sell your talent short for a couple of hits, especially from animators that have an attitude problem and delusions of grandeur.

"Looking for exposure"? LMAO OMG Move out of your mom's basement before you talk shit like that, hobo.

So who are you talking about, exactly?

Pretty clearly stated in the rant above. Names don't matter. Attitudes do, so don't try to personalize this. I'm against the attitude, because the person is completely irrelevant.

If I read it right, some douche who was going to collab with him tried to tell him he shouldn't get any revenue from the body of work in question.

OK
The average user doesn't generate enough ad revenue to even collect on it,
makes a newspost that "I'M LEAVING, I'LL BE FAMOUS ONE DAY, YOU'LL SEE!",
and we never hear from the dude again.

Pro tip
Senator John Dean is a badass mother fucker
You might stop patronizing him, so he can freshen up your collab for free
Considering It won't be long before you have to pay good money for that shit

You pretty much got it.

I would think that it would suck if I wouldn't be able to share in the revenue if I contributed my time and effort to a collaboration, definitely a downer and something that would piss me off. Rob has an agreeable pro tip.

I agree with both of you.

that's complete bullshit, if that happened to me i'd be like "seeya" and take my work with me.

Anybody who wants to know the name of the fuck who started this whole mess so you don't get caught up in his crap, PM me.

Yeah well thats just like your opinion man.

I will allow this comment to stay ONLY because of the Dude reference.

WOAH. You can make money off of NG? I thought it was like an open-source thingy mabobber

LOL not real money. Like a couple bucks, but it's the principle of it all.

u r a attention whore

and i care for monsieur-monsieur that he does not care.
and stop going to a war against jay. just do ur own shit

LOL...I'm an attention whore, yet you post twice on my comment board. I'll keep your comments here just for the irony of it all.

And by the way...if you're gonna suck JAE's dick you should at least spell his name right...you're not much of a surrogate, man, try again...

Lol I've been watching how you behave. Even if you are a good voice actor or anything else, your also a tool and behave like a child consistently. God knows how many animators you pissed off. You behave so poorly it's really just sad. I'd feel bad for you if I gave a care about your piss poor self esteem and your need to feel better by ranting about people just because they don't do what you want.

Grow up, make a new account, start over. Your obviously clueless on what kind of conduct you should display when trying to get involved with other animations.

You are a nobody and your advice is falling on deaf ears, ma'am. LOL I'll keep this comment up too because it's insane how you think you can tell me what to do and I'll just, like...do it. The fact you're "watching" me is weird enough...then you say to stop what I'm doing when you yourself haven't done shit on this site? LMAO SERIOUSLY LAME CITY, dude...

I love the attention this thread is getting. Maybe it'll shed some light on the idiotic ways you people act.

Yeah, sounds like the same bullshit people give you when you're gigging.

"Oh, we'd LOVE you to play at our cocktail party!"
"Sounds great! How much are you willing to shell out?"
"But you like making music don't you? Besides, LOADS of people will be there."

It's a crock of shit. There is always an expense taken, whether it's gas money, bus fare or even just time. People shouldn't expect something for nothing, and you should have the integrity and the confidence to ask for what you deserve.

Tl;dr I concur.

It's good to have people to check up on me. I feel loved and stuff. Thanks for your response, Ax. It helps a great deal.

SJD the only advice I can give you is to just move on to other things haha. I'm not dogging Newgrounds or anything here, but I think we can all agree it's pretty bush league around here. Here, it's really all about just getting some views. What makes NG special is how concentrated the community is and how easy it is to get people to hear you music, as opposed to say, Soundcloud or Youtube or something. And while there is most certainly some talented individuals here, a source of professionalism, at least in regards to how people conduct themselves in "the industry/business" it is not.

But because it's so artsy you're gonna run in to that mindset where people get weird about money. I personally haven't had to deal with that for awhile but I definitely remember playing gigs like AxTekk below me mentioned.

Just keep going, when you get to bigger things people understand the money situation. It's not even an issue. I have a few shitty clients at the studio that might try to haggle me, but they're always the people who shouldn't really be there in the first place. I just think of those kinds of clients like: I'm selling them an experience, to be in a studio and feel like they're real musicians for a few hours, not that I'm making a grand artistic statement with them, or helping them to realize theirs or anything.

Don't get caught up with dumb shit, just find people who have the same aspirations and attitudes you do.

I appreciate the detailed answer, and you're completely right about all of it. Thanks for checkin up on me.
